(evernia prunastri) Yugoslavia. Native Americans have referred to this plant as oak lung.. lung moss.. lungwort and others. It was used for ailments of the lungs and to heal wounds. The natural fragrance of oakmoss goes well with the scents of cedar.. clary sage.. clove.. cypress.. galbanum.. labdanum.. patchouli.. pine.. rosemary.. sandalwood.. and vetiver. Some like it with citrus oils like lemon.. orange.. or pink grapefruit. It can cause skin sensitivity in some people.. so use only in very small amounts (less than .6% or less than 3 drops/ounce). Oakmoss is one of the best fixatives to use if you want to make your potpourri blend stay fragrant longer.. especially if you have been using a lot of fleeting top notes.. such as citrus oils. Oak Moss does well with many different oils.. and is a popular perfumery ingredient for that very purpose. In small concentration.. at the background of the blend it supports many aromas. Great fixative.. that binds other more volatile aromas and makes them last longer. Oakmoss smells like damp bark with a bit of seashore thrown in - comforting and steadying on a deep level. Many consider it effective in money spells.. and it definitely works well as an Elemental Earth scent. Try in combination with other Earth scents for a grounding oil or as an ingredient in Druidic or Celtic oils. Because it grows on oak trees.. you might also consider this herb for scenting natural perfumes dealing with dependency (or the fear of it). Oakmoss evaporates slowly and so will stay in a combination for a long time. Its character as a scent.. then.. is a lot like its character as a plant - slow and foresty - and like the nature (pun intended) of Earth magick: moving to a geological clock. It's wonderful in forest-type potpourri blends. Wylundt considers this a Moon scent.. and perhaps that fits with the touch of seashore in its fragrance. To me.. though.. it is all Earth - deep.. dark.. moist.
